Many commercial emollient creams contain water, emulsifiers and stabilisers. These give a feeling of immediate softness, but the effect fades quickly. Natural emollients hold moisture longer because they are absorbed into the skin instead of coating it.
Synthetic emollients have larger molecules which form a barrier over the epidermis leaving a greasy feeling which is ultimately drying to the skin.
